The Abbeville Red or Iris nelsonii blooms in early April at Palmetto State Park in Vermilion Parish. The rare species of Louisiana iris is endemic to Louisiana and is named in honor of horticulturalist Ira S. Nelson. Its range is restricted to a single, privately owned swamp in Vermilion Parish. It has been introduced to Palmetto Island State Park to make it viewable to the public.
