  • The Blessed Mother Celebration begins at a small chapel on Fedele Road in Tangipahoa Parish and processes to Our Lady of Pompeii Church in Tickfaw. The two-day celebration started in 1927 when The Blessed Mother appeared to Mrs. Sam Spica asking her to build a shrine in her honor. A chapel was built and a replica of the original Mother of Grace statue arrived from Palermo, Italy. Each year on the first Saturday in July, the statue of the Blessed Mother is carried in a solemn procession from the chapel to the church and back again following Mass on Sunday afternoon.

  • Catholic Charities and St. Joseph Cathedral hosts the annual Good Friday Way of the Cross procession in Baton Rouge, La. Worshippers traveled the 14-station route around the State Capitol reflecting on the Passion of Christ and how its relates to the world today.  William Acosta, 15, a Redemptorist High School student carried the cross during the procession.

  • St. Paul Church in Bayou Goula is nearly restored since Hurricane Gustav blew off the steeple and damaged the roof in 2008. Built in 1871 the church continued to serve the community until the storm. After the Gustav the Baton Rouge diocese planned to demolish the church, but locals and parishioners formed the non-profit Friends of St. Paul Church and took the task of rebuilding the historic church.

The church’s famous Lourdes Grotto was constructed in 1876, only 18 years after the apparition of the Blessed Virgin to St. Bernadette Soubirous.

  • The cornerstone for the Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church was laid in March, 1941, and the completed building was dedicated on May 17, 1942. Built during World War II, the new Church underscored the incredible commitment and determination of area parishioners to create a magnificent place of worship in Baton Rouge, La.
