  • Executive Director of the Evangeline Area Council, Boy Scouts of America Art Hawkins, left, and Louisiana Swamp Base Executive Director Ben Pierce stand outside McGee’s Swamp Tours at Louisiana Swamp Base near Henderson, La.  Swamp Base started operations in 2013 when 140 scouts signed up to for high adventure paddle trips through the Atchafalaya Basin. Hawkins and Pierce have great plans for Swamp Base and are planning constructing a site which will feature a welcome center with wildlife and cultural exhibits, a theater and an outfitter’s shop. The site will also include a K-12 educational center, a university research center, dormitories and a conference center for public and private groups.

The home was completed in 1838 and is built of hand hewn cypress timbers fastened with wooden pegs.
